Athletic Uniforms over the Past 100 Years

100 years of Northeastern sports

Covid-19 is keeping many athletes away from the arenas, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the Northeastern Huskies. We have scoured Northeastern’s yearbooks from the past 100 years in order to show you the progress of athletics through the times. Here is what we found…

Firstly…

In order to contrast and compare, let’s look at what Northeastern’s athletes have been playing in in the most recent sports events. In 2018 Northeastern University rolled out new atletics logos inspired by modern tattoo art. The new logos appear on the uniforms, gear, and promotional material for all Northeastern varsity, club, and recreational sports.

1920’s

In the 1920’s (and many decades after), sports were exclusively for men. Coaches wore suits (at least in photos) and knee pads as well as other protective gear looked quite different from today. Northeastern University got its first mascot, Husky the First, in 1927.

Northeastern! Rah, Rah, Rah; Northeastern!

1930’s

Cheerleading throughout most of the first half of the century was led by men and instead of doing gymnastics they stuck to engaging the audience in popular chants such as “Northeastern! Rah rah rah; Northeastern!”.

1940’s

The 1940s were of course marked by WWII and some sports were discontinued during the war years. Soldiers coming back from the war were in fact allowed to finish their degrees in only two and a half years since they had already lost so much of their youth.
